people didn't react well to that particular song partly due to song being off par when you consider their classics and the subject matter was not something that would usually be associated with abba. "head over heels" wouldn't have gone to #1, no matter when it was released.:o especially, when you consider their actual #1 singles, it doesn't even come close. And I'll check out the BBC thread, sounds very interesting, thanks One flop might be a fluke, but to have suddenly have two in a row for one of the biggest pop groups of the previous decade is very telling and probably disconcerting for the group hence why they disbanded shortly after. And I think it's perfectly plausible people might suddenly have gotten sick of Abba around the time of Head Over Heels and DBYC even if the Visitors and Hits Collection had just gone to number one, popularity can suddenly just dive for no discernible reason. Word of advice though - Don't refer to Abba as Europop! They were nothing of the sort.Ībba were Europop, maybe you're getting the term confused with Eurobeat or Eurodance in which case I'd agree with you that Abba were nothing of the sort. That does not in any way diminish the song. Yes, it should have been a 1982 big seller. Any instant No1 that fell away badly the next week would diminish that legacy.

All Abba's No1's were proper, real No1 hits, that all climbed to the top, always held the top spot the next week. But for me, it would count for little meaningful. Just need to campaign or find another 100,000 likeminded people to buy the track in the same week and hey, a number one song. I finally bought Head Over Heels about 3 years ago as an individual single. Anyone who wants it can buy it right this moment. Not all classics are massive, and there is no need to re-release the track. Also whether the song being nearly 6 minutes long had a bearing on it's success. I can't help but wonder if the very modest position that The Day Before You Came made, was a factor in hastening the break up of Abba. A very knowledgeable contributor who worked in a chart return shop at the time gave some fascinating insight. If you have the patience to check out last years Top Of The Pops 1977 thread, a good discussion took place between us regulars about The Day Before You Came and why it stalled at No32 late in 1982. Each week it shows the show from this week back 35 years ago. I contribute regularly to the Top Of The Pops 1978 - BBC4 thread, where Abba have just had their 7th UK No1 with Take A Chance On Me. Quite why these two singles very abruptly stalled after such a long run of classic and huge hit singles is strange, because they were both quality songs on a par with the previous ones. I agree with Head Over Heels and The Day Before You Came. Even in late 1982 at the time The Day Before You Came was out, their Greatest Hits album, The First Ten Years was another No1 album. Yes, their final top ten single was One Of Us at Christmas 1981 when it was the festive No3, but they held that years Christmas No1 album with The Visitors. Unfortunately by 1981/2, most people were over Abba If Head Over Heels had been released in 1976, it probably would have gone to number one.
